There’s a conversation that keeps coming up in the world of mission-driven organizations. Someone proposes exploring artificial intelligence for a process, and almost immediately an unease surfaces that’s hard to articulate. It’s not exactly fear. It’s not exactly rejection. It’s something closer to an unanswered question: should we?

It’s a legitimate question. But there’s another one that gets asked far less often and that, in our view, is just as urgent: what happens if we don’t?

Fear has a name, but it also has a cost

We understand the skepticism. Artificial intelligence comes loaded with overhyped promises, questionable use cases, and a narrative that sometimes feels more like science fiction than a real tool. In organizations whose work has direct consequences on people’s lives, caution is completely reasonable.

But caution is not the same as paralysis.

When a social organization refuses to explore AI, or uses it so limitedly that it barely scratches its potential, it isn’t protecting itself from a risk — it’s taking on a different one. The cost of not making good use of available technology is very concrete: more resources consumed to achieve the same impact, slower processes, reduced reach.

Inefficiency also has an ethical cost.

The most common mistake: confusing automation with delegation

One of the most frequent misunderstandings when talking about AI is the assumption that using it means ceding control. That if an algorithm helps make a decision, human responsibility disappears.

That’s not true, and it doesn’t have to be.

Artificial intelligence, used well, doesn’t replace human judgment — it amplifies it. It can process large volumes of information, identify patterns that would take a team weeks to find, or automate repetitive tasks to free up time for what truly matters. But decisions that have consequences for people must still pass through people.

The challenge isn’t choosing between AI and human judgment. It’s knowing how to design systems where both coexist honestly.

Transparency: not a nice-to-have, but the foundation

If there’s one principle that should be non-negotiable in any AI development with a social purpose, it’s transparency. And we’re not talking about transparency as an abstract concept — we mean something very concrete:

  • How does this system work? The algorithm making decisions or generating recommendations cannot be a black box. The people affected by it, and the organizations using it, have a right to understand the logic behind it.

  • What data does it work with? An AI system is only as good — and as fair — as the data feeding it. Knowing what information the model uses in real time is essential for detecting errors or biases.

  • What was it trained on? For trained models, the origin of training data matters enormously. Does it represent the populations you’ll be working with? Does it contain historical biases that could be perpetuated?

  • What model is underneath? Not all AI models are equal, nor do they share the same ethical commitments. Knowing what technology underlies the product you’re using is part of due diligence.

This transparency isn’t just good practice. It’s what makes it possible, when the system fails — and systems do fail — to identify where, why, and how to correct it.

AI makes mistakes. That’s not a secret.

One of the less comfortable aspects of working with artificial intelligence is accepting that it isn’t deterministic. It doesn’t always give the same result for the same question. It can make errors. It can have biases that aren’t immediately obvious.

That’s not a reason to avoid it. It’s a reason to use it honestly.

Any responsible AI development must contemplate, from the design phase, how errors will be detected, how they’ll be corrected, and who has the authority and capacity to do so. You can’t assume the system works well and move on. It must be observed, questioned, and adjusted continuously.

In social impact contexts, where the consequences of an error can affect people in particularly vulnerable situations, this isn’t optional.

Understanding in order to shape

There’s something we think is especially important to say, even if it’s a little uncomfortable: rejecting AI out of ignorance doesn’t protect anyone.

The regulation of artificial intelligence is a conversation happening right now — in parliaments, in international bodies, in boardrooms. If organizations with the strongest commitment to public service stay out of that conversation because they don’t understand the technology, others will write the rules.

Staying informed, experimenting cautiously, forming your own view: all of that is also a form of social responsibility.

You don’t need to be technical to have informed opinions on these things. You need curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Where to start with AI in your organization

There’s no single answer, but there are questions worth asking before any AI project:

What are we using it for? AI is not a solution looking for a problem. It needs to respond to a concrete, measurable need.

Who does it affect? Identify from the outset the people who will be impacted by the system, directly or indirectly.

What happens if it’s wrong? Design review and correction protocols before deploying, not after.

Are we transparent with those who matter? Both the users of the system and the final beneficiaries of the organization.

How do we evaluate it? Define success metrics that include not just efficiency, but equity and real impact.

A neutral technology in hands that are not

Artificial intelligence, like any tool, is neither inherently good nor bad. What defines it ethically is who uses it, with what purpose, with what transparency, and with what willingness to take responsibility for its consequences.

Mission-driven organizations have, precisely because of that, an opportunity they shouldn’t squander: to show that the most powerful technology of our time can be used in service of people — with rigor, with honesty, and without abandoning human judgment.

It’s not about choosing between doing good and being efficient. It’s about understanding that, today, being efficient is also a way of doing good.
